Stoker had many sources for Dracula

“No one book that I know of will give you all the facts. I learned a good deal from E. Gerard’s ‘Essays on Roumanian Superstitions,’ which first appeared in The Nineteenth Century, and were afterwards published in a couple of volumes. I also learned something from Mr. Baring-Gould’s ‘Were-Wolves.’ Mr. Gould has promised a book on vampires, but I do not know whether he has made any progress with it.”

Jé-rouges

09:52 May 14 2012
Times Read: 673

Also Known As: Loup-Garou

Origin : The celebration of carnival in Haiti reaches its high point during the three days before Ash Wednesday, in which all the shadowed, hidden, or repressed aspects of society at every level can be freely expressed. Voodoo makes a strong showing in this feast of the imagination. Thus, some groups assume the costumes of devils, werewolves, and zombies, conforming exactly to the traditional stories of Haitian voodoo.

Cause : The "werewolves" who devote themselves to this end are sorcerers, possessed by insatiable spirits, who are believed to turn themselves into animals in order to suck the blood of babies. The tendency to become a werewolf can be inherited, or it can be the result of the rash act of buying evil spirits.

There is also a superstition that werewolf spirits known locally as Jé-rouge (red eyes) can possess the bodies of unwitting persons and nightly transform them into cannibalistic lupine creatures.

After the earthquake that shattered Haiti in January 2010, several people accused of being loups-garous have reportedly been lynched and killed. By night, mythical creatures were said to prowl the refugee camps, snatching and murdering children. Many Haitians are convinced that people possessed by evil spirits turn into wolves after dark, a version of the werewolf legend. These “loups-garoux”, or “wolf-men”, are thought to be preying on defenceless people sleeping in the open. In Haitian folklore, it is a person who is possessed by a spirit and can turn into a beast or even a dog, cat, chicken, snake or another animal to suck the blood of babies and young children.

"The loup-garou is profiting from the earthquake to eat the children," said Milot Bazelais, a civil servant who was left homeless by the quake and also works for a charity group to help neighbourhood children.

Most of Haiti's 9 million people are Roman Catholics but many also practice voodoo, a religion with African roots.

Aura Noir

Black aura always caught my attention since I saw in Padova the depiction of Judas with a black aura and a devil behind him.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

I tried to find more about black auras thinking to Aura Noir a metal band and other cultural links with the subject.

On a site I found this interesting passage that seems connected to our theme: vampirism.

Of course I am still skeptical about Belanger`s hypothesis with aural vampirism.

"People who are disconnected like this ARE draining. Black is an absorbing color, so instead of radiating their inner light, these people feel like "black holes" that are constantly soaking up our energy. (It stands to reason that by wearing black or mentally surrounding ourselves with a black shield, we can also protect ourselves from being drained.) These "psychic vampires" tend to be very insecure, though on the surface, they may endlessly boast and brag or whine and complain in order to keep our attention/energy."
